Chest

Cable Crossover

The cable crossover is a chest isolation move: the cables keep tension through the whole range, even where your hands meet.

Setup

Set the pulleys just above shoulder height and grab the handles. Step forward, one foot in front, torso leaning slightly. Arms open, elbows slightly bent — keep that angle for the whole set. Chest up, shoulders down.

Execution

  1. Stand between the cable stacks, grab the top handles, arms together in front of you — starting position.
  2. Inhale and open your arms out in a wide arc until you feel a stretch in your chest, elbows slightly bent.
  3. Exhale and bring your arms back together along the same arc.

Common mistakes

  • Bending and straightening your elbows — that turns it into a press; keep the elbow angle fixed.
  • Yanking the weight with your torso — stand stable and bring the handles together with your arms only.
  • Shoulders creeping up to your ears — drop them, or your traps take over.
  • Opening too far back — stop when you feel the stretch in your chest, not your shoulder.
